History of Lake Tahoe
With the onset of the California Gold Rush in 1849, the passes to the north and south of the Basin saw a massive influx of pioneers coming to make their fortune. The first road to be carved directly across the mountain was the East-West road, also known as the “Bonanza Road” built after the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Load, today known as Highway 50. With the discovery of the richest silver deposit known in the U.S., Virginia City went from a small town to a bustling metropolis of 20,000, helping gain Nevada its statehood and bringing wealth and culture to the area.
By 1868, the western section of the transcontinental railroad was completed and extended the Central Pacific Railroad via the Donner Pass. Parts of the line can still be seen today from Highway 80, an impressive feat of engineering, holding on to granite walls, passing through tunnels that protected the train from the winter weather.
By the late 19th century, Lake Tahoe had become a popular vacation spot for the wealthy of San Francisco, thanks to the buzz of the area created by the railroad stops through the Sierras. Exposed to the wonder and beauty of the mountains and the lakes, more and more visitors came for their summer vacations.
Guests of the resorts that were built would take the South Pacific railway from San Francisco to the Lake Tahoe Railway and Tahoe City, where they would settle into one of the resorts or lodges around the lake.
