Tahoe City’s Fanny Bridge Project
A new alternative has been proposed for the Tahoe City Fanny Bridge/Highway 89 overhaul on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. The new plan aimed at reducing traffic in and out of the West Shore is made up of two parts: The first proposes a new or rehabilitated bridge over the Truckee River and realigning Highway 89 by adding a two-lane bypass through Tahoe Cities 64-Acres Park which is located on National Forest System land, while re-designating a portion of the existing highway by the bridge to a street that would be open to all traffic. The second portion proposes three roundabouts that would form a triangle – one at the Tahoe City “Wye,” and one at either end of the new bypass.
The Tahoe Transportation District Board of Directors is considering and approving this plan Friday, March 27. If approved, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board will also need to approve the plan. The plan is currently scheduled for final approval at 9:30 am on April 23.
The tentative timeline, if approvals happen, includes project design involving public engagement which would take place during the summer/fall of 2015, with construction to begin in May 2016.
