.akes Trail Alpine Meadows
With Autumn upon us here in the Sierra, we find outdoor activities that we can participate in given the dwindling daylight hours. Like most people, I typically work a 9-5 and now it’s getting dark right around 7. This leaves me with only a few hours to get outdoors and have some fun. Luckily I live right in Alpine Meadows. I work across the street from where I live so there is a 1-minute commute leaving me with most of the 2-hour window to play like a child.
In Tahoe, one of my favorite things to do in the Fall is to hike the 5 Lakes Trail right here in Alpine Meadows. This trail is no secret and is utilized by 1,000’s of hikers over the course of the year. But in Autumn there are fewer hikers and the air is a little cooler making for a great after-work hike.
Fall hike location
The hike starts out at the junction of Alpine Meadows Rd and Deer Park Rd. It rises gently towards the Five Lakes plateau through expanses of exposed granite and jagged volcanic rock. The trail is in great shape and the views are phenomenal. When the weather is warm there are lots of great places to swim or let your dogs swim. Because it’s fall we typically set a fast pace and spend just a few minutes at the top in order to get back to the car before dark. The total length of the trail is approximately 2 miles up. It is a round trip total of 4 miles. Therefore it takes approximately 1:30 with a little break at the top to stroll around the lakes or just take in the views.
I would recommend this 5 Lakes Trail in Alpine Meadows to anyone who wants to have a great hike. You can take in some Alpine Meadows views, and enjoy the outdoors with limited time. However, if you decide to hike this trail on the weekends or during the peak summer months I must warn you that there will be lots of people taking advantage of this magnificent trail.
